Every lo-fi plugin damages the recording you already have. TALLBOY throws the recording away and replays your melody on four modelled chip channels. Here is when each one is right.
"Lo-fi plugin" covers a whole category: bitcrushers, sample-rate reducers, tape and cassette emulations, vinyl noise and crackle, wow and flutter, band-limited radio and telephone tones. There are excellent ones from serious developers, and they all share one operating principle - your audio goes in and comes back damaged in a specific, characterful way. If that is what you want, buy one of those; TALLBOY is not a substitute. TALLBOY is a resynthesiser: it pitch-tracks a monophonic source and rebuilds the performance on modelled handheld-console sound-chip channels, so the output is a synthesised chip voice playing your line. Different operation, different result. It also happens to contain a conventional decimator, which is the one place the two categories overlap.

Every one of those is applied to the source. Mute the plugin and your recording is intact underneath, because the recording was always what was making the sound. That is the definition of an effect, and it is not a criticism - most of the time it is exactly right.
TALLBOY listens to a monophonic track, works out what pitch you are singing or playing and how the note is shaped, and then discards the audio entirely. The pitch and envelope drive four modelled sound-chip channels:
Nothing of your waveform survives. That is the point. Crush a vocal and you get a crunchy vocal; resynthesise it and you get a chip voice singing your hook, bending when you bend, cutting off when you stop. That is what people mean when they say "8-bit," and no amount of degradation gets there, because degradation cannot invent a pulse wave.

The right-hand column describes the lo-fi category in general, not any one product. Individual plugins differ enormously in scope, price and licensing — check the developer's own page before you compare.
The resynthesiser. Monophonic pitch tracking into two pulse channels with four duty cycles, a 32-sample 4-bit wavetable, and an LFSR noise channel gated by transients. This is the cartridge nothing in the lo-fi category does, because it is synthesis rather than processing.
Host-synced arpeggiator from 1/4 to 1/32, with UP, DOWN, UPDN, RAND and CHRD modes, a four-octave range, and glide up to 400 ms. Hold a bass note and get a tempo-locked chip sequence without opening a piano roll.
The conventional lo-fi part: bit reduction from 1 to 16 bits, rate divide from 1 to 64 with jitter for unstable-clock smear, and a post filter that sweeps down to 540 Hz for the small-speaker tone. Runs on any source, including drums and full mixes, with or without the other cartridges loaded.
Eject all three and TALLBOY is true passthrough - it nulls against dry. Nothing is quietly "improving" your signal when you are not asking it to.
The lo-fi category is not TALLBOY's competition so much as its neighbour, and a lot of records want both: a tape or crush plugin holding the drums and the bus together, and a chip voice doubling the hook. Ask what you want the output to be. If the answer is "this recording, but rougher, older, smaller," reach for a lo-fi plugin - they are good at it and TALLBOY does not try to take that job. If the answer is "a sound chip playing this part," no degradation plugin at any price will get you there, because you cannot subtract your way to a pulse wave. That is the one thing TALLBOY is built to do, for $20, with the crusher included anyway.
